The First World War or the ‘Great War’ was the first global conflict. Millions of soldiers and civilians died in the process.
One hundred years after these events we are still convinced that the events of 1914-1918 have had a fundamental impact on our society and that the victims of this horrible war deserve a worthy tribute.

The present Government of Flanders, under the leadership of Minister-President Peeters, is in power from 2009 until 2014. With its project for the future "Flanders in Action", the Government of Flanders wants to lead Flanders, by 2020, to the top of the European regions.
