Reporting a change of address

When you move, you must notify your new city’s or municipality’s Civil Affairs Office of your new address within eight working days. You must also report your change of address when you move within the same municipality.

Conditions

You cannot report the move until you have actually moved.

Procedure

You must report the change of address to the municipality in which the new address is located:

  • You can report the change of address online via the digital desk of your (new) municipality or
  • you can go to the Civil Affairs Office of your (new) municipality.

In order to report the change of address for the entire household, it is sufficient for one of the adult members of the household to do so.

To be able to report the change of address, you need a valid identity document stating your national registration number.

If an unemancipated minor leaves the residence of their parents for the first time in order to establish their main residence elsewhere, they must be accompanied by someone exercising parental authority.

Verification of domicile and update of identity documents:

After reporting the change of address, a neighbourhood police officer or an authorised civil servant will check whether you actually have your main residence at the reported address. After this verification, you are registered at your new address and invited to the town hall to have your identity card updated. You will need your electronic identity card with the PIN for this.

Once your identity card has been updated, you can notify agencies and companies of your change of address. Government agencies will be notified automatically.

Vehicle registration certificate

A change of address no longer needs to be entered on vehicle registration certificates. Vehicle registration certificates will only state the address that was valid at the time it was issued.

Requisites

Your electronic identity card with the PIN.

Main residence for minors

For a minor who moves in with one parent or alternates between living with each of the parents, you must also bring the following documents with you:

  • the mutual agreement of the parents,
  • the court decision,
  • and the notarial deed.
