European Commissioner Phil Hogan visits Limburg's Fruit Test Center
European Commissioner for Agriculture Phil Hogan and Flemish Minister for Environment, Nature and Agriculture Joke Schauvliege visited the Fruit Test Center in Sint-Truiden on 23 October. They were invited by the Limburg Deputy for Agriculture, Inge Moors, to show how the European and Flemish support translates into research that can "make effective improvements to fruit cultivation."
With a share of more than fifty percent in the Flemish fruit sector, fruit cultivation in Limburg cannot be deciphered. Especially in Haspengouw cultivation is interwoven with the region. As much as seventy percent of the Limburg fruit area is located in the region. Today, the International Fruit Test Center has become an internationally respected research partner within the fruit sector.
European resources, together with Flemish and provincial support, form an important part of the funding of the test center. The test center mainly focuses on cultivation innovation, cultivation diversification and dissemination of knowledge to local fruit farmers. During his visit to the test center, European Commissioner Hogan made it clear that he wants to support cooperation between knowledge institutions, local farmers and governments.
