Commemoration Raid op Zeebrugge
On 23 April 1918 the British Royal Navy attacked the port of Zeebrugge, probably one of the finest feat of arms in the Great War, aiming to block the harbour as base for German submarines.
This event is commemorated every year in Dover. A large delegation from the City of Bruges as well as the General Representative of the Government of Flanders in the UK attended the commemoraton. After a ceremony at the cemetery, the mayor of Dover sounded the Zeebrugge bell 8 times on the balcony of the town hall.
