Flanders Fields Centenary Chair
On 9 November Flemish Parliament Speaker Jan Peumans gifted the ‘Flanders Fields Centenary Chair’ in the Welsh Assembly. This chair is a reference to the ‘Black Chair’ that the Welsh poet Hedd Wyn won on the annual poetry contest ‘‘Eisteddfod’ in 1917. At the moment of the award ceremony he had lost his live in Passendale. The chair was made in the United-Kingdom by Eugeen Vanflerteren, a refugee from Mechelen. The students furniture design of Thomas More University made a new ‘Flanders Fields Centenary Chair’ to mark the shared history between Flanders and Wales. The Welsh Assembly gifted the Flemish Parliament in return the painting ' Chinook ' by Welsh painter Osi Rhys Osmond.
