Registration of a vehicle at the Vehicle Registration Service (DIV)

In Belgium, any motor vehicle that you want to use on public roads must be registered. The Vehicle Registration Service (DIV) of the Federal Public Service Mobility and Transport is in charge of registrations. The registration is mandatory for

    • all types of motorised vehicles: cars, passenger cars, buses, lorries, motorcycles, trailers with a load capacity higher than 750 kg, motorcycles and speedpedelecs.
    • and for all categories: new vehicles, second-hand vehicles, and imported vehicles.

    How to register a vehicle?

    Online through WebDIV

Any vehicle bought in Belgium and any second-hand car that was previously registered in Belgium should be registered online (through WebDIV). Please find below the steps to be followed:

    • First, fill in the pink form ‘application for vehicle registration’, which you can get from the company delivering the vehicle, the insurance company where you have taken out a civil liability insurance policy, a vehicle technical inspection centre or the DIV.
    • Then, go to your insurance company, your broker or leasing company. They will register your vehicle online through WebDIV (available in Dutch and French only).
    • In the 24 hours following the registration, you will receive a certificate of registration and the license plate delivered by Bpost. A license plate costs 30 euros, which you will have to pay in cash when Bpost delivers it to you.
    • Fix the official number plate at the back of your car.

Commercial number plates can also be extended through WebDIV.

You can check your application status online (in Dutch).

Sending the form to the DIV

The following vehicles cannot be registered online:

    • Second-hand motorbikes
    • Taxis
    • Rental vehicles with driver
    • Vehicles with chassis number smaller than 17 signs
    • Vehicles of which nature, chassis number, date of first use… have been modified.

It is also impossible to apply online through WebDIV for commercial number plates, transit plates, CD plates, G plates and duplicates.

For the vehicles mentioned above, the following procedure should be followed:

    • Fill in the pink form ‘application for vehicle registration’, which you can get from the company delivering the vehicle, the insurance company where you have taken out a civil liability insurance policy, a vehicle technical inspection centre or the DIV.
    • You can then send that form by post to the DIV or deliver it yourself at one of the DIV counters (in Brussels or in your province). Attention: the certificates of registration will be sent by post. To bridge the gap between the application and the delivery of the number plate, DIV will hand you a copy of your application valid for 3 days.

You can check your application status online (in Dutch).

If you want to register a vehicle you bought abroad, you must first go to a Customs Office.

After the registration of your vehicle

After the registration of your vehicle, you will receive the following documents:

    • certificate of registration you must always keep inside your vehicle.
    • Your official number plate (by mail, cost of 30 euros) which you have to fix at the back of your vehicle. At the front, you should fix a reproduction of the license plate (except for motorbikes).
As soon as you receive a European number plate to replace your old license plate, you must have the old number plate be scraped in the following month.
    • A tax sheet for the annual road tax sent by the Vlaamse Belastingdienst (Flemish Tax Service).
