New IUCN fund supports rapid response to invasive alien species in Europe
Early intervention is essential when dealing with invasive alien species: it increases the chances of success, is cost-effective and prevents unnecessary animal suffering. With a growing number of introductions and species on the European Invasive Alien Species Directive, there is an urgent need for action. The IUCN Save Our Species project has therefore launched an ongoing project call for funding for rapid responses in the field. This three-year initiative is funded by the European Union. The fund is flexible: all non-native species with a proven impact on nature are eligible. The call is open until 10 February 2027. Please consult the guidelines for applications.
The project focuses on species that are still in an early stage of invasion and have a significant ecological impact, for example on protected species, Red List species or protected areas such as nature reserves or Natura 2000 sites. Inspiration can be found in the recent RadIUS report by INBO. The amounts range from 10,000 to 50,000 euros. Projects can run for a maximum of one year. Partnerships involving public authorities or public-related entities are strongly encouraged.
INBO is part of the advisory group that oversees this fund but is not involved in the evaluation of proposals. Together with a group of experts, the institute offers strategic and technical support. In this way, we promote and support this strategic capacity building and share the results of our research and good practices in invasive species management.
