Migration barriers and habitat fragmentation are the main threats impacting freshwater and diadromous fish species globally (Belletti et al., 2020). Though barrier removal is often the preferred course of action, it is not always feasible because of economical or safety‐related reasons. Potential other solutions to promote fish movement include fish passes and fish elevators, though there efficiency is often strongly dependent on the local conditions and target species (Noonan et al., 2012). Therefore these systems need to be thoroughly assessed to understand how the efficiency is determined by the environmental conditions and target species.
