How to start as an entrepreneur in Flanders?

Do you want to be your own boss? Before you pursue any commercial or non-commercial activity as a self-employed person (or investor), you need to make sure you’ve satisfied all relevant administrative requirements.

Professional card

A professional card gives you permission to perform a self-employed activity in Belgium. There are certain categories of foreign nationals who do not need a professional card. If you’re a national of a European Union member state, or Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein or Switzerland, you’re exempt.

Starting a childcare setting or out-of-school childcare setting

Are you thinking of starting your own childcare business? You’re more than welcome to do this in Flanders. There are a few requirements you’ll have to meet.

First of all, you’ll need a permit to run your own business. Once you have that sorted out, you need a licence that specifically relates to starting your own childcare setting for babies, toddlers and/or schoolchildren. A little paperwork, but a great way to ensure the little ones you take care of are going to be safe.

Sports agents

There are regulations governing sports agents in the Flemish Region. You need to follow these regulations if you’re planning to represent anyone who is paid—or will be paid—as an athlete. One of these requirements is to register. It’s pretty straightforward, especially with this manual(PDF file opens in new window) to help you through the process.

Temporary employment agency

Are you thinking of starting your own temporary employment agency? Employment agencies bring employers and jobseekers together. They support employers in their search for personnel. At the same time, they help jobseekers to find jobs that put their skills and experience to good use.

All private employment agencies in the Flemish Region need to be officially recognised. This means you’ll need a licence. There are various other requirements you’ll need to meet before you’re granted official recognition by the Flemish Region. Read up on what you need to do to offer your services as temporary employment agency on the Flemish labour market.
