Creation of enterprises
Nearly 82,500 companies founded in 2022
In 2022, there were a total of 82,494 (open definition) companies in the Flemish Region. That is 12% more than in 2021. Since 2009, the number of companies founded has increased almost every year. The largest increase occurred in the years 2014 and 2016. There was only a slight decrease in the years 2012-2013 and 2015.
More enterprises founded in the Flemish Region than in the other regions
In 2022, there were 29,334 enterprises in the Walloon Region and 12,445 in the Brussels-Capital Region. The number of enterprises in the Flemish Region (82,494) was therefore almost twice as high as the number of enterprises in the other regions combined.
Survival rate at almost lowest level in 10 years
In 2022, the survival rate (open definition) of companies after 5 years in the Flemish Region was 65.4%. This means that 65 of the 100 companies founded 5 years earlier were still active in 2022.
The survival rate remained virtually stable throughout the period 2013-2021 with 65% as a minimum (in 2014 and 2018) and 68% (in 2021) as a maximum. In 2022, the survival rate dropped again to one of its lowest levels.
