Sediment concentrations, fluxes and source apportionment : methodology assessment and applications in Nete and Demer tributary basins (River Scheldt basin, Belgium)

The research was aimed at determining the contributions of different sediment sources within the Nete and Demer tributary basins of the river Scheldt basin (Belgium). This initial intent was then focussed into three focal points. First of all, the total suspended sediment flux was calculated at selected monitoring stations in rivers in the Nete and Demer basins. Secondly, the contribution of ferric authigenic sediment to the total suspended sediment transport in the Kleine Nete basin was determined, as this source of sediment is most often overlooked in sediment flux studies, even though its contribution can be quite substantial. And finally, the sediment fingerprinting approach for source apportionment was assessed for its applicability in the Demer basin.
