Abstract
Several CPTU tests were performed in both ideal and adverse conditions at a test site in Zwijnaarde.
The influence of exposure to unsaturated soils was examined by holding well-saturated piezocones in dry
sand for several minutes without a protective rubber membrane. After the exposure to dry sand, penetration was
performed from the ground level through the unsaturated and saturated subsoil. These tests show suboptimal pore pressure measurements, compared to the tests under ideal circumstances, regardless of the duration of the exposure to dry sand. Results reveal that, in adverse conditions, the densely packed sandy top layer, rather than the exposure to dry sand, has contributed to the desaturation of the piezocones. The impact of the viscosity of the saturation liquid on pore pressure quality was studied by performing tests with a 50 and 100 cSt silicone oil. Under ideal circumstances, the viscosity does not play a role in terms of quality of the pore pressure measurements. However, in adverse conditions, results showed a better performance for a silicone oil with 100 cSt viscosity.

Abstract
Two full-scale backward erosion piping field tests were executed in the Hedwigepolder, The Netherlands. The tests were aimed to further validate the hypothesis that tidal sand has more resistance to piping than fluvial sand. Tidal sand has relatively high percentages of fines (clay, silt), often contains discrete clay and silt layers, is more cohesive, more anisotropic and has a higher critical shear stress than fluvial sand. Piping was initiated by infiltrating water into a completely enclosed body of tidal sand. This was done using infiltration tubes on one side of each test site, while at the other side a ditch was dug down to the tidal sand layer. By gradually increasing water levels in the tubes, an increasingly steep water pressure gradient was formed in the sand initiating backward erosion piping. The piping process was monitored using an array of techniques, including Electrical Resistance Tomography (ERT), Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS), over 200 piezometers and infrared cameras. After the test the entire site was excavated to track the route of the pipe and to study the subsurface in detail. The combination of different monitoring techniques will allow data fusion and will give complementary insight into the processes that led to piping. This paper gives an overview of the used monitoring techniques, discusses the pros and cons of the different techniques and gives recommendations for future field experiments.

Abstract
In the framework of a large infrastructure project in Antwerp (Belgium), where a two-level tunnel is planned, a series of load tests on diaphragm wall segments were executed. The diaphragm wall will be founded on stiff Boom clay and will support the excavation of the tunnel during construction and will also serve as foundation of the finalized structure. The aim of the tests was to investigate the vertical bearing capacity of the diaphragm walls. Four wall segments with cross section of 2.8m x 0.8m and a length of about 40m were tested. It was opted for static load tests using integrated Osterberg cells close to the base. This paper deals with the set up, experiences and results of the monitoring of the jacks, piezometers, fiber optics, inclinometers, topographical measurements, settlements targets, laboratory tests and CPT’s. A challenge was the verticality of drilling and diaphragm wall and the guiding of the monitoring and data wires through the steel bearing plates. Measurements were visualized automatically and continuously in an online tool during the test. A back calculation based on the monitoring was made to better assess the behavior of the soil under the loading conditions. Experiences in this project can be useful for similar test campaigns.

Abstract
Grout mixes in geotechnical instrumentations are widely used, especially to backfill the gap between borehole and installed instrumentation. Even though it is well known and established that the mechanical and hydraulic characteristics of the grout mix can be critical for a good performance of the instruments, there is a lack of thorough knowledge of the grouts’ real behaviour.
The paper reviews and presents the results of several laboratory tests to assess the hydro-mechanical characteristics of several grout mixes and provides some insights into some frequently asked questions related to them. In particular it focuses on the evolution in time for grout mixes with regard to permeability, strength and stiffness and the impact on the mechanical or hydraulic characteristics when using different types of cement/bentonite.
An example is presented, where the impact of the grout characteristics on the instrument behaviour is illustrated.

Grout mixes in geotechnical instrumentation. Some insights.pdf (in Dutch)(PDF file opens in new window)
Abstract
Water levels and water pressures are essential for almost every geotechnical design. They are often also a driving force behind difficulties encountered during construction or during the life cycle of a construction.
Although continuous in-situ logging with conventional unconnected water level loggers provides some information, a site visit is required to collect the necessary data. For projects that do not require real-time follow-up, visualising data on an internet platform has the advantage that these data can be consulted at any time from distance.
The last few years LoRa (Long Range) has popped up in the IoT (Internet of Things) world and became more and more widely used. With LoRa ranges up to several kilometres are possible with the advantage that it has a low power consumption and the disadvantage that you can only send a small bundle of data. For water level measurements the latter is not a problem as it only requires sending out a small bundle of data.
With that in mind a couple of projects were setup with several LoRa water level loggers. They were tested thoroughly and were compared with conventional water level loggers. In this paper our initial experiences with the LoRa loggers are shared.

Measuring water levels using LoRa – a kick off.pdf (in Dutch)(PDF file opens in new window)
In Terneuzen is de bouw van de Nieuwe Sluis momenteel lopende, geleid door de Vlaams-Nederlandse Scheldecommissie (VNSC). In 2022 zal het eerste schip door de Nieuwe Sluis varen. De Nieuwe Sluis bevindt zich midden in het huidige sluizencomplex. Omdat in de ondergrond Boomse klei en glauconiethoudend zand aanwezig
zijn, is het ontwerp en de uitvoering een geotechnische uitdaging. Het inbrengen van buispalen en damplanken, wordt in bestekken meestal als een uitvoeringsrisico van de aannemer beschouwd. Deze schat de heibaarheid op basis van ervaringsgegevens in. Ter voorbereiding op het bestek van de Nieuwe Sluis, wordt een studie naar de heibaarheid van de combiwanden van het referentieontwerp uitgevoerd. Voor heibaarheidsvoorspellingen bestaan geen bindende richtlijnen of normen. De bestaande berekeningsmethodes geven veel spreiding op de verkregen resultaten; zeker als de ondergrond bestaat uit specifieke grondlagen zoals Boomse klei en lauconiethoudend zand. Ondanks de ervaringen opgedaan bij de bouw van de Sluiskiltunnel en de proefcampagne voor de Oosterweelverbinding blijven de nodige onzekerheden bestaan.

De bouw van de Nieuwe Sluis in Terneuzen is een uitdagend project dat wordt uitgevoerd binnen een nauw samenwerkingsverband tussen Nederland en Vlaanderen. In dit artikel wordt een overzicht gegeven van het grondonderzoek dat in de voorbereidingsfase werd uitgevoerd. Tevens worden de belangrijkste geotechnische aspecten en risico’s toegelicht, verbonden aan de specifieke ondergrond in het projectgebied, met name door de aanwezigheid van Boomse klei en glauconiethoudend zand.

The main method for the determination of consolidation parameters in Flanders is still the incremental loading test (IL test). This method can take up to several weeks for some typical Flemish overconsolidated (OC) clays. In theory, the same relationship between settlement and vertical stress can be obtained by performing a constant rate of strain test (CRS test).
The main advantages of a CRS test are that the data is continuous and that the test can often be completed considerably faster than an IL test. In this paper, results of both IL and CRS tests on two undisturbed stiff OC clay samples of the same geological formation (Maldegem formation deposited during the Paleogene period) were compared. CRS tests were performed based on ASTM D4186, but constant stress stages were controlled using effective vertical stress instead of total vertical stress as most important adjustment to the standard. In addition, special attention was paid to the development of initial swell pressure and selecting an appropriate rate of strain for this clay with a very high plasticity.
Similar values for compressibility and hydraulic conductivity were found using both IL and CRS test results. As the duration of a CRS test on this clay with low hydraulic conductivity can also take up to a few weeks, the time saving aspect of the test was found to be limited for the stiff OC clay tested. The uncertainty in estimating the pre-consolidation pressure and swell pressure was smaller using the continuous CRS test results.
Discrete element method (DEM) is an appealing technique to simulate soil deformation. However, the calibration of the material parameters in the model remains challenging due to the high computational cost associated with it. In this study, the stress-strain relation of 125 unsaturated soil samples was simulated using DEM and material parameters were calibrated with Kriging. The Young’s modulus and friction angle were found to be the most sensitive DEM material parameters, and they had a significant correlation with the bulk density, clay content and water content of the undisturbed soil samples. The DEM simulation showed that the deformation process was a combination of elastic and plastic processes, also at low stresses. Further improvement such as the coupling with (and calibration of) a fluid dynamics model might allow to more accurately simulate the dynamic behaviour of unsaturated soil compression.

Different soil reconstitution methods lead to samples with different initial structure. This paper presents a laboratory investigation which aims to study the influence of initial fabric of specimens on the undrained behavior of clean Chlef sand subjected to triaxial compression tests. The samples tested were prepared at three level of relative densities using different deposition methods, i.e., the layered dry deposition (LDD), the tapped funnel deposition (TFD), the water deposition (WD) and the moist deposition (MD), and they were consolidated under different confining pressures. In order to evaluate the soil fabric, an analysis using X-ray μCT was conducted on three loose samples after soil reconstitution and before triaxial testing. It was found that the void ratio of the sample prepared by the moist deposition method is slightly higher than that of samples reconstituted by the two others methods (TFD and WD). The triaxial results showed that the resulting fabric affects the behavior of the sand. It was found that the effect of initial fabric is more pronounced at large strain where the specimens prepared by the moist deposition method always present the lowest resistance. These findings, especially those found at loose state, are in agreement with those obtained from μCT.

Het project Oosterweelverbinding behelst het sluiten van de ringweg rond Antwerpen langs de westzijde van de stad.
Dit omvangrijke en complexe infrastructuurwerk bevat een groot aantal kunstwerken met kruisingen en aansluitingen van bestaande wegen, waterwegen en havendokken.
De realisatie van deze nieuwe verbinding zal de verkeersknoop op de bestaande ringweg moeten oplossen.

The Geotechnics Division of the Flemish Government uses fiber optics in civil constructions to measure strains and temperature during construction. In the summer of 2016 the construction of a tunnel under an existing road started. In a first phase diaphragm walls were constructed. Those walls will keep the tunnel open during excavation and will function as the future walls of the tunnel. For safety reasons the deformation and stability of these walls are closely monitored. During construction of the diaphragm walls, fiber optics were attached to the reinforcement cage. The fiber optics runs on both sides along the complete depth of the wall. This emplacement allows to monitor the vertical strain and temperature changes during the different construction phases. An inclinometer tube is placed in the diaphragm wall in the vicinity of the fiber optics. This allows the researchers of the Geotechnics Division and the KU Leuven Technology Campus Ostend to closely monitor both the forces in the wall and the horizontal displacement of the wall. When these exceed the allowable limits, corrective actions can be undertaken. This paper presents both the practical aspects of installation and some preliminary results.

Ruimtelijke ordening in de Vlaamse ondergrond? Een verkenningsgesprek.Vandaag kijken ruimtelijk planners je veelal vragend of onzeker aan, wanneer het woord ‘ondergrond’ valt. Voor velen is dit nog een ‘ver-van-mijn-bed’ verhaal, terwijl anderen stilaan aan ondergrondse uitwijkscenario’s voor ons toenemend ruimtegebrek beginnen te denken.

Voldoen de historische kaaimuren in Antwerpen aan de nieuwe normen van het Masterplan Scheldekaaien? Waterwegen & Zeekanaal NV (W&Z) laat de kaaien testen en stabiliseert of vervangt ze waar nodig.
Om de kaaimuur ter hoogte van het Loodswezen te testen, liet W&Z een belastingsproef uitvoeren. Het doel: nagaan of de kaaimuur niet te veel beweegt bij een belasting van 3 ton per vierkante meter. Die belasting werd aangebracht met grote zandzakken. W&Z en de afdeling Geotechniek monitorden de proef.
Innovatieve meettechniek
“Voor de monitoringscampagne combineerden we visuele waarnemingen en topografische metingen met metingen van het grondwaterpeil, het Scheldepeil en de verplaatsing van de kaaimuur in een verticaal vlak”, vertelt Kim De Beule van Geotechniek. “Voor die laatste parameter gebruikten we een innovatieve meettechniek: de in-place inclinometer (een instrument om hellingsveranderingen te meten, nvdr). Een ketting van inclinometers mat elk kwartier de helling van de kaaimuur. De data werden via een mobiele connectie naar een server gestuurd en konden via een webapplicatie worden uitgelezen. Door de precisie en de hoge frequentie van de metingen konden we zelfs minimale verplaatsingen onder invloed van het getij meten.” De intensieve monitoringscampagne toonde aan dat de verplaatsingen van de kaaimuur ruim binnen de gestelde toleranties lagen. Er is dus geen nood aan dure renovatiewerkzaamheden.
Om het contact met de klanten te optimaliseren, werken de Technisch Ondersteunende Diensten (TOD) sinds 2016 met accountmanagers. Samen met hun secondanten vormen zij voor elke klant een vast aanspreekpunt.
TOD haalde de inspiratie voor de nieuwe werkwijze uit klantengesprekken, workshops voor de afdelingshoofden TOD en voorbeelden uit de bedrijfswereld. “Na overleg beslisten we om één accountmanager per klant te kiezen”, zegt Koen Haelterman, afdelingshoofd Geotechniek. “Elke accountmanager wordt bijgestaan door een secondant uit een andere afdeling. Zo komen we tot een kruisbestuiving. De accountmanager is een vast aanspreekpunt voor de klant en behoudt een overzicht van alle lopende en toekomstige projecten met TOD. Hij/zij kent de beleidsbeslissingen en de prioriteiten van de klant en gebruikt die kennis bij de interne besluitvorming. De langetermijnplanning wordt verankerd binnen een duidelijk afsprakenkader rond de samenwerking met de klant en de beschikbare capaciteit.”
Snel bijsturen
De accountmanagers en secondanten zijn intussen al even bekend:

- Afdeling Maritieme Toegang + Beheersmaatschappij Antwerpen Mobiel: Koen Haelterman (afdelingshoofd GEO), Nathalie Gosseye (ATO) en Gauthier Van Alboom (Departement, enkel voor BAM)
De eerste contacten tussen de accountmanagers en ‘hun’ klanten vonden plaats in het najaar van 2016 en waren bedoeld om het principe van accountmanagement toe te lichten. In 2017 zijn er nieuwe besprekingen gepland. De accountmanagers focussen zich in eerste instantie op dienstverlening, behaalde resultaten, verbeterpunten … De werking wordt op elk COVA van TOD geëvalueerd, zodat er snel bijgestuurd kan worden.
Voor de bouw van de Verapazbrug en de Meulestedebrug in Gent voerde Geotechniek sonderingen te water uit. Opdrachtgevers Wegen en Verkeer Oost-Vlaanderen (AWV) en de afdeling Bovenschelde van Waterwegen en Zeekanaal NV (W&Z) beslisten de onderzoeken samen aan te besteden.
De geplande Verapazbrug over het Handelsdok moet de omgeving van de Dampoort ontlasten van het drukke verkeer. Het gevraagde geotechnische onderzoek omvatte sonderingen te water en te land en diepboringen met laboratoriumonderzoek. Ongeveer gelijktijdig kwam de vraag naar sonderingen te water voor de nabijgelegen Meulestedebrug. Omdat grondonderzoek onder water erg duur is, beslisten de opdrachtgevende afdelingen de handen in elkaar te slaan.
Goede voorbereiding
Geotechnisch onderzoek te water moet goed worden voorbereid, omdat er belangrijke technische en financiële risico’s aan verbonden zijn. De opdrachtgevers betalen een flinke som voor de huur van een werkplatform en het bijhorende vlottend materieel. Als alle technische randvoorwaarden grondig worden voorbereid, kan de uitvoering optimaal verlopen. De afdeling Geotechniek bereidde het technische deel van het bestek voor en zat mee aan tafel tijdens de gunningsfase om de kwaliteit van het materieel te beoordelen.
Klaar in acht dagen
Na afloop van de gunningsprocedure startte Ghent Dredging N.V. met een duikinspectie. Het doel: de onderzoekspunten scannen op de aanwezigheid van steenpuin of ander materiaal dat de sonderingen zou kunnen bemoeilijken. Tegelijk bracht Geotechniek voor de twee sites alle nutsleidingen in kaart. Zodra de duikgegevens gekend waren, gingen de elektrische sonderingen van start. Dankzij de vlotte samenwerking tussen alle belanghebbenden werd op acht dagen tijd een reeks van elf sonderingen uitgevoerd op de sites van de Verapazbrug en de Meulestedebrug.
Optische glasvezels worden vooral gebruikt om een internetsignaal te verspreiden. Geotechniek zet de draden in om krachten en temperatuur te meten tijdens bouwwerken.
In de zomer van 2016 startten aannemers in Aalst met de bouw van enkele tunnels op de Siesegemlaan. Een eerste stap was het plaatsen van diepwanden (de latere ‘muren’ van de tunnel). Die moeten de tunnel openhouden terwijl de grond wordt weggegraven. Geotechniek en de KU Leuven controleren de sterkte en stabiliteit van de diepwanden.
Vervormingen opsporen
Tijdens de plaatsing van de diepwand bevestigde Geotechniek glasvezels aan de wapeningskooi. “De draden strekken zich uit over de volledige diepte en lopen aan beide zijden van de wand. Zo kunnen we in verschillende belangrijke bouwfasen metingen uitvoeren”, zegt Eva Goeminne van Geotechniek. “De onderzoekers meten zowel rek als temperatuur en vergelijken de waarden met die van de eerste (nul)meting. Zo wordt duidelijk welke veranderingen in de diepwand optreden. Als de wand op een bepaald punt doorbuigt, buigt de optische glasvezel mee.” Met een inclinometerbuis kunnen de onderzoekers ook vervormingen van de diepwand opmeten. Als de bewegingen te groot worden, kan men remediërende maatregelen treffen.
Het team van de Databank Ondergrond Vlaanderen (DOV) vierde in 2016 haar twintigjarige bestaan. In het kasteel van Groenendaal waren ook de vroegere collega’s welkom voor een hapje en een drankje.
De DOV is een uniek samenwerkingsverband tussen de Departementen MOW en LNE (Leefmilieu, Natuur en Energie) en de Vlaamse Milieumaatschappij (VMM). Ze dragen elk vanuit hun eigen specialisatie (geotechniek, geologie en grondwater) bij aan een allesomvattende databank over de ondergrond: opbouw en aard van de grond, grondonderzoeken, grondwatergegevens, geologie … De databank ontstond in 1996 en groeide in twee decennia uit tot een veelzijdig en vlot toegankelijk instrument.
Makkelijker
“De DOV heeft het veel makkelijker gemaakt om ondergrondgegevens op te zoeken”, meent voormalig drijvende kracht Gauthier van Alboom. “Als je vroeger informatie nodig had, moest je uren in stoffige archieven doorbrengen. Via de website van DOV vind je alle nuttige grondinformatie gratis en snel terug. De nieuwe DOV-verkenner, die sinds begin 2016 online is, is erg toegankelijk: hij biedt nog meer mogelijkheden om gegevens over de ondergrond in Vlaanderen op te zoeken en geeft de resultaten helder weer. De DOV doorstaat de vergelijking met buitenlandse initiatieven en wordt internationaal als een benchmark erkend. Een mooi voorbeeld van samenwerking over de agentschappen heen!”

Ga één dag aan de slag en schenk de opbrengst aan een derde wereld project: die opdracht kregen de vierdejaarsstudenten van het Atheneum Ooievaarsnest in Gentbrugge. Feriye Boone ging de uitdaging aan bij Geotechniek.
Het job-voor-één-dag-project kaderde in Work for Change, een actie van Zuiddag. Hun “loon”/opbrengst dat de leerlingen verdienden ging integraal naar uit een favela in Rio de Janeiro dit in samenwerking met de ngo KIYO. “Tussen de jobs die Zuiddag aanbood, vond ik niet meteen mijn dada. Ik wilde graag een dagje praktisch werk doen”, vertelt leerlinge Feriye Boone. “Bij Geotechniek, waar mijn papa werkt, vond ik een leuke uitdaging. Op 20 oktober vertrokken we samen naar het technisch laboratorium in Zwijnaarde. De laboranten legden me uit welke proeven ze uitvoerden en lieten me ook zelf proeven doen.”
Spectaculair
In de voormiddag ging Feriye aan de slag met droge en natte ‘zevingen’: gezeefde grondstalen. Ze voerde testen uit om humus en kalk uit de grond te verwijderen. Feriye: “De chemische reactie door het toevoegen van waterstofchloride en waterstofperoxide was best spectaculair. Er ontstond rook en de toegevoegde vloeistof kleurde groen. Ik keek toe hoe de laboranten grondstalen zeefden en voerde dan één van de volgende zevingen zelfstandig uit. Dat was wel precisiewerk. Zo’n zeving is wel wat meer dan enkel grondkorreltjes verdelen.”
Voor herhaling vatbaar
Na de middagpauze hielp Feriye bij het inbouwen en de consolidatie van een grondstaal voor triaxiaalproeven (proeven om de schuifweerstandskarakteristieken van een grondstaal te bepalen). “Er kwamen heel wat koppelingen en kranen bij kijken. Dat was knap om te zien. De bouw van de Deurganckdoksluis is één van de grootste werven momenteel lopende in België.
De belangrijkste geotechnische aspecten horende bij zowel het ontwerp als de uitvoering van deze sluis worden kort toegelicht.
In dit artikel wordt de nadruk gelegd op het intensieve monitoringsprogramma dat momenteel aan de gang is.
Specifieke aandacht wordt besteed aan de meetapparatuur die werd geplaatst ter begroting van de zwel van de Boomse klei.

Within the context of the Scheldt Quays Masterplan, the stabilization of the dilapidated historical quay walls was put to study.
For drawing up the geotechnical dossier all available geological and geotechnical information along the quay wall section was collected; beneficial use could be made of the Regional Database of the subsoil of Flanders (DOV). Based on this inventarisation an extensive program of in situ tests and complementary monitoring and laboratory tests was elaborated.
Analysis of the investigation data resulted in a characterisation of the soil layering and corresponding soil parameters.
The schematic geotechnical profile consists of an upper layer of fill material, overlaying a dense tertiary sand layer (Berchem Formation) and the very stiff overconsolidated Boom clay.
The foundation level of the quay wall is situated just above or in the Boom clay. The excavation works for the foundation result-ed therefore in a stress relief of the upper part of the clay layer. Quite rapidly after construction important horizontal defor-mations of the quay wall as a whole appeared. Due to this movements, design of stabilized walls should be performed on basis of residual shear strength parameters derived from direct shear tests.
To determine the water pressure distribution along the quay wall open standpipes (in the sand layers) and closed piezometers (in the Boom clay) were continually monitored and tidal variations were noted. Furthermore a long time CPTU dissipation test was performed in the Boom clay.
The extensive geotechnical design resulted in an economic and sustainable design for the stabilized quay walls.
Abstract. In order to relieve the busy traffic arteries of Antwerp (Belgium), the closing of the ring around Antwerp was put to study by BAM (Beheersmaatschappij Antwerpen Mobiel). The design of this construction requires detailed insight in the behaviour of the overconsolidated Boom clay layer during and after dewatering and removal of the covering soil layers. For this purpose a fully monitored excavation test was performed in order to assess soil behaviour and specific techniques to be used in anticipated projects in the Antwerp area. This paper will specifically present and evaluate the results regarding swell and pore pressures recorded in the Boom clay. From the monitoring results it can be derived that the Boom clay shows a quick response to a fluctuation in water level in the overlaying aquifer. The Boom clay also shows a severe pore pressure reduction as a result from loss on effective stress during excavation. These two effects should be considered separately. The underpressure is caused by swell hindered by a very low permeability of the Boom clay. Up to 50% of the effective stress reduction can be transferred into a pore pressure reduction. This condition results in a long term dissipation and swell process towards a gradient of approximately 25 kPa pressure increase per m depth increase. This effect intersects with the original hydraustatic pressure in the Boom clay.

Hiermee wordt aandacht gegeven aan de grote toegevoegde waarde van bijvoorbeeld paal testen, lab testen en full scale testen aan de geotechnische adviespraktijk. Afdelingshoofd Gauthier Van Alboom en Koenraad Haelterman gaven in naam van geotechniek een presentatie over geotechnisch onderzoek tijdens de infosessie Rio-leren van de VMM.
De toepassing van de observational method bij het ontwerp van structuren (toegelaten binnen EC7), laat een kostenefficiëntere uitvoering toe zonder in te boeten aan veiligheid. Dit vereist echter wel dat de belangrijke parameters die een rol spelen bij het ontwerp van een constructie (vervormingen en krachtswerking) tijdens en na de uitvoering gemonitord worden.
In dit artikel wordt beschreven hoe met behulp van innovatieve optische vezeltechnologie de rekken (en door berekening, de krachtswerking) in verticale beschoeiingen kunnen begroot worden. Het meetprincipe wordt kort toegelicht, waarna aan de hand van een praktijkvoorbeeld de meerwaarde van deze innovatieve meettechniek aangetoond wordt. Uit de toepassing blijkt dat deze nieuwe techniek zeer geschikt kan zijn, maar dat er ook enkele aandachtspunten zijn bij de uitvoering en interpretatie die men in beschouwing moet nemen. Deze aandachtspunten worden hier ook kort toegelicht.

ABSTRACT The closing of the ring around Antwerp (Belgium) was put to study by BAM. The construction of two-layer tunnels necessitate excavations up to great depth. Purpose of this unprecedented (sheet)pile driving test was to assess performance of state of the art top
range (sheet)pile driving equipment, soil resistance and specific techniques to be used in the Antwerp area. A special focus was on the dense glauconite sands. The retrevievability also had to be put to the test. From the tests it was learned that full length pre-drilling by means
of an auger provided the best results for pile (sheet)pile driving, in terms of depth, duration and retrievability. On a larger scale, no deviation in cone resistance or friction has been encountered. At the steel surface a 3 cm thick clay plaster was visible after retrieval of the sheetpiles, caused by the manipulation of the glauconite. Vibration levels and settlements were acceptable at a 15 m distance.

In de periode 1863 - 1913 werden meerdere pogingen ondernomen om een kanaal te graven van Ieper naar de Leie in Vlaanderen. Zoals in die tijd ook voor de aanleg van spoorwegen gebeurde, werd de aanleg van het kanaal in concessie gegeven, in dit geval aan de Compagnie
du Canal de la Lys à l’Yperlée. Dit houdt in dat de nodige fondsen voor de aanleg van het kanaal werden geleverd door privé investeerders, die eens het kanaal in gebruik tolgelden of vaarrechten mochten innen.
Het kanaal zou via een waterweg een verbinding maken tussen Ieper en de Leie en zodoende ook met Gent, Antwerpen en Noord-Frankrijk. Een probleem was wel dat Ieper gelegen is in het hydrografisch bekken van de IJzer en dat het kanaal daarom diende te worden aangelegd
doorheen de hoger gelegen kruinscheiding tussen de bekkens van de IJzer en van de Leie. Om het aantal sluizen, nodig om de hoogteverschillen te overbruggen, zoveel mogelijk te beperken heeft men in opeenvolgende pogingen ter hoogte van de kruinscheiding een tunnel,
een diepe uitgraving of een combinatie van beide voorzien.

[EN] When dewatering work is carried out, the roles and responsibilities of the various parties involved are often unclear. A working group, set up in the heart of the TI-KVIV Society ‘Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering’, drew up guidelines to assist the client and designer in the design of a dewatering operation, from the soils survey through to the text of the technical specifications. The guidelines also provide assistance to the client, designer and contractor in aspects concerned with the performance of the dewatering operation. The article briefly describes what one can find in the Dewatering Guidelines: responsibilities, necessary soil surveys, what is included in the study of the designer and recommendations regarding the implementation aspects.
[NL] Bij bemalingswerkzaamheden is het vaak onduidelijk welke de taken en verantwoordelijkheden zijn van de verschillende betrokken partijen. Een Werkgroep, opgericht in de schoot van het TI-KVIV Genootschap ‘Grondmechanica en Funderingstechniek’, stelde richtlijnen op die de opdrachtgever en de ontwerper begeleiden bij het ontwerp van een bemaling, vanaf het grondonderzoek tot bij de technische bestektekst. Nadien vinden de opdrachtgever, de ontwerper en de uitvoerder in de richtlijnen ook de nodige begeleiding bij de uitvoeringsaspecten van de bemaling.Het artikel omschrijft kort wat men in de Richtlijnen Bemalingen kan vinden: verantwoordelijkheden, benodigd grondonderzoek, wat omvat de studie van de ontwerper, en aanbevelingen met betrekking tot de uitvoeringsaspecten.

Om de bevolking kosten-efficiënt te kunnen beschermen tegen overstromingen maakt de overheid gebruik van kosten-baten-analyses m.b.t. mogelijk uit te voeren infrastructuurmaatregelen. Hiertoe dienen analyses van de kosten (bouw- en onderhoudskosten) en de baten (vermeden schade en slachtoffers) te worden uitgevoerd. Bij de bepaling van de schade en slachtoffers (opstellen van overstromingskaarten, bepalen van stijgsnelheden van het water) dient rekening gehouden te worden met overloop over de dijken (waterpeil hoger dan kruinpeildijk), met golfoverslag en met bresvorming geïnitieerd
door geotechnisch falen van de waterkerende dijk.
Door de Vlaamse overheid werd een studie uitgeschreven die tot doel had een analyse uit te voeren van het geotechnisch falen van dijken, waarna een op de Vlaamse situatie toegespitste methodologie opgesteld diende te worden die toelaat een toetsing uit te voeren van de Vlaamse dijken en haar toepassing vindt binnen schade- en risicoberekeningen.
ABSTRACT: The presence of hard concretions and lithified beds in the subsoil can cause serious problems during the realisation of infra-structure projects. As these concretions do most often not occur as continuous layers, they also are a real challenge for geotech-nical investigations. This paper gives an overview of geological features and general characteristics of typical hard soil concre-tions in Flanders. Special attentions is paid to the important interaction between geology and geotechnics. Some typicalexamples are given of successful and unsuccessful geotechnical investigation programs and their effects on the realisation of in-frastructure projects.
RÉSUMÉ : La présence de concrétions dures et d’horizons lithifiés dans le sol peut causer de graves problèmes lors de l’exécution de projets d’infrastructure. Puisque dans la plus part des cas ces concrétions ne se présentent pas comme des couches continues el-les constituent un défi réel pour les investigations géotechniques. Cet article donne un aperçu général des caractéristiques géologiques et mécaniques de quelques concrétions typiques pour le sous-sol Flamand. Un intérêt spécial a été dédié à l’interaction entre la géologie et la géotechnique. Quelques cas représentatifs sont présentés de recherches géotechniques qui soit ont abouti à des résultats positifs, soit ont mené à un échec.

Actual data consist of drillings, CPT, groundwater wells and groundwater supply licences. Since the introduction of the website, DOV has proved to be a powerful tool in geotechnical design; data collection form the basis of preliminary design, global inventory and analysis of geotechnical parameters for important infrastructure projects; short time actions can also be taken from interpretation of available data, based on engineering judgement. However project related soil investigation remains a necessity, and one cannot solely rely on information of
subsoil databases for design purposes.
RESUME : La Databank Ondergrond Vlaanderen (DOV) se veut ˆetre la base g´en´erale de donn´ees, accumulant et fournissant de l’information sur le sous-sol en Flandre (Belgique). Les donn´ees actuelles sont constitu´ees de forages, d’essais de p´en´etration, de puits d’eau et d’autorisations de pr´el`evements d’eau souterraine. Depuis l’introduction du site web, la DOV a d´emontr´e qu’elle ´etait un outil performant pour la conception g´eotechnique; la collecte de donn´ees est `a la base de tout conception pr´eliminaireainsi que de l’inventaire et de l’analyse globale des param`etres g´eotechniques pour des projets de grande ampleur.
Pour des actions `a court terme on peut ´egalement recourir `a la DOV, si l’information est interpr´et´ee par des professionnels de la g´eotechnique. Cependant toute conception de projet doit rester bas´ee sur une investigation du sol sur le site mˆeme et ne peut
se reporter uniquement aux informations issues de bases de donn´ees.

Glauconiet is een kleimineraal dat onder de vorm van donkergroene korrels in heel wat mariene zanden voorkomt. De korrels hebben nagenoeg dezelfde afmetingen als de deeltjes van de zandmatrix waarin ze voorkomen. Doordat glauconiet echter uit kleimineralen bestaat zijn ze veel zachter dan het kwartszand. Glauconiet - korrels kunnen dan ook gemakkelijk vervormd en verbrijzeld worden. Dit heeft een belangrijke impact op de geotechnische eigenschappen en het gedrag van zandgronden met een significant gehalte aan glauconiet. Mechanische bewerkingen op glauconiethoudende zanden die resulteren in een verbrijzeling van de glauconietkorrels, zoals tunnelboringen, verdichtings werken, heiwerken, kunnen heel wat problemen opleveren. Het gedrag van de grond evolueert immers van zandig tot uitgesproken kleiig, en vereist dan ook aangepaste uitvoeringsmethoden. Doordat het poriënwater in glauconiet houdende zanden altijd ijzerhoudend is, zijn speciale voorzorgen nodig bij het uitvoeren van grondwaterverlagingen en retourbemalingen. Dit artikel geeft een overzicht van de aard en de geotechnische eigenschappen van glauconiethoudende zanden met specifieke aandacht voor het verbrijzelingseffect. Er wordt ook uitgebreid ingegaan op praktische problemen die zich kunnen voordoen wanneer men in dergelijke zanden werkt.

ABSTRACT: Active monitoring is often suggested as a method to decrease the required safety coefficients in the design stage of a construction. In order to apply active monitoring, precise, reliable and interpretable measurements of the actual behaviour of the structure and soil-structure interaction are required. To obtain this data, accurate and robust monitoring tools should be available at an acceptable cost. An online monitoring test set-up was realized in a railway-infrastructure project site in Anderlecht (Belgium). The braced excavation consists of a nailed jet grout wall with HEB profiles, installed immediately next to a railway track. Both advanced and traditional monitoring equipment is installed to measure the deformation of the jet grout wall, deformations behind the jet grout wall (on the railway tracks) and forces in the nails. The present paper focuses on the results of the measurements in and behind the jet grout wall and on the comparison between the different techniques.
RÉSUMÉ : L’auscultation active est souvent suggéré comme une méthode permettant de réduire le coefficient de sécurité du dimensionnement d’un ouvrage. Afin d’appliquer une auscultation active, des mesures précises, fiables et interprétables du comportement réel des ouvrages et de l’interaction sol-structure sont requises. Afin d’obtenir ces données, des outils d’auscultation précis et robustes doivent être disponibles à un coût acceptable. Un essai de surveillance en ligne a été réalisé sur le site d’un projet d’infrastructure ferroviaire à Anderlecht (Belgique). L’excavation consiste en un mur d’étanchéité cloué, avec des profils HEB, installé à proximité immédiate de la voie ferrée. Des technologies aussi bien avancées que traditionnelles ont été utilisées pour mesurer les déformation du mur d’étanchéité, les déformations derrière le mur (sur les voies ferrées) et les forces dans les clous. Le présent article vise à comparer les résultats des mesures dans et derrière le mur et à comparer les différents techniques de mesure.

ABSTRACT : In Flanders (Belgium) large amounts of sands, to be used in the construction and glass industry, are excavated by means of suction dredgers. It showed that for deep excavations the dredging process cannot be modelled by conventional methods. In order to comprehend the process of breaching a laboratory test set up was elaborated and a full scale breaching test was performed.
RÉSUMÉ : En Flandres (Belgique) l’extraction de larges quantités de sables, destinées à la construction et la fabrication du verre, est réalisée au moyen de dragueurs à suction. Il est mis en évidence que pour des excavations profondes le processus de dragage ne se laisse pas modeler par des méthodes conventionnelles. Afin de mieux comprendre la formation de brèches un banc d’essai a été élaboré, et un essai en vraie grandeur a été réalisé.
