Transferring a vehicle from an EU country to Belgium

Are you buying a vehicle in another EU country? Or will you become the owner of a vehicle in another EU country thanks to a gift or inheritance? In that case, the second-hand vehicle must be registered in that country before you can transfer it.

In Belgium, you must first declare the vehicle for tax purposes and have it subjected to a technical inspection. After that, you must have it insured and, if you are planning to use the vehicle on the public road, have it registered with the Vehicle Registration Service (Dutch: Dienst voor Inschrijvingen van Voertuigen/DIV). (in Dutch)(opens in new window) After registration certain categories of vehicles must return to the inspection centre for an administrative inspection.
