Assessing the impact of the Westdiep Sea farm on avifauna. Evaluation of the Monitoring Approach through Power Analysis and Recommendations for Future Monitoring
This report presents the results of the power analysis. Using species- and location-specific data characteristics derived from the INBO seabird dataset and the results of the first four surveys, a large number of randomised datasets were generated. These datasets were used to simulate
both decreases and increases in seabird densities - taking into account the currently planned monitoring strategy - followed by statistical testing to determine whether such changes would be detected as statistically significant. This allowed us to estimate the likelihood that a true
change in seabird density would be detected under the proposed monitoring programme—i.e. the statistical power. Our objective was to achieve a power of at least 80% for detecting a 50% increase or decrease in the most relevant seabird species. Based on the outcomes of this analysis, we provide recommendations on how to adapt the monitoring strategy for the future
