Flemish support for international climate action: FICAP projects from 2021 successfully completed
Four years after the first call for proposals from the Flanders International Climate Action Programme (FICAP), all projects from 2021 have been successfully completed. With concrete steps and tangible results in terms of both climate mitigation and adaptation, Flanders can look back with pride on this first series of international climate actions under this programme.
FICAP is an initiative of the Flemish government in the context of international climate financing, as stipulated in the Paris Agreement. The programme supports countries in the Global South in their climate challenges and the implementation of their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). In 2021, 12 projects were selected, representing a total of 2.85 million euro in reported Flemish international climate support.
The projects are spread across the globe and cover a wide range of topics: from research into wastewater treatment in India to providing sustainable water energy for remote communities in Kenya. In Uganda, farmers switched to sustainable rice cultivation, while in Ecuador, new mangroves were planted to protect coastal areas, store carbon and stimulate biodiversity.
The diversity of projects demonstrates not only the scale and complexity of climate challenges, but also the innovative strength and drive of Flemish companies to contribute to solutions. With FICAP, the Flemish government aims not only to achieve immediate impact, but also to lay the foundations for lasting action and investment.
