Investing in people and talents

The people of Flanders and their talents are the greatest capital Flanders has. They shape the new Flanders. For this reason, the Government of Flanders is increasing its investments in education and the digitalisation thereof.

It is making lateral entry into education more attractive by better honouring seniority acquired elsewhere. This is how the teacher shortage can be solved.

The labour market is facing enormous challenges: rising unemployment, but also shortages and mismatches, changing training needs, digitalisation, etc. The Government of Flanders wants to quickly raise the employment rate to 80%.

VESOC agreement ‘All hands on deck’.

On 14 December 2020, the Government of Flanders and the social partners concluded a VESOC agreement on the recovery of Flanders’ labour market. With the ‘All Hands on Deck’ agreement, the Government of Flanders is earmarking an additional EUR 190 million for a powerful, sustainable recovery and transformation of the labour market in Flanders.

This new ambitious agreement focuses on three priorities:

  • A training and career offensive: measures that stimulate lifelong learning and that strengthen more people of Flanders in their careers through training, reskilling and (re)orientation. 2021 is the year of training. It will be a year in which as many workers, jobseekers, temporarily unemployed and inactive people as possible will be trained, reskilled or reoriented.
  • Inclusive and people-centred digitalisation: measures to strengthen digital talents and skills, to maximise digitalisation of training and to ensure fully-fledged participation of all in the digital society.
  • Sustainable employment for all.

Together with the Flemish Service for Employment and Vocational Training (VDAB), employers’ organisations, trade unions and many other partners, the Government of Flanders is taking up the challenge of reskilling as many people as possible and helping them find work.

Finally, the Government of Flanders makes work pay with the Flemish job bonus, as agreed in the Flemish Coalition Agreement.
