Energy as a strategic pillar of security
Energy security has become a crucial condition for society to function effectively. Recent geopolitical developments, such as the war in Ukraine, demonstrate the vulnerability of centralised energy supplies and how reliance on fossil fuels threatens our security. The roadmap emphasises that a reliable, autonomous, and sustainable energy supply is central to safeguarding our sovereignty within the European and NATO policy agenda.
Flanders as a key player in the energy transition
With a strong industrial base, leading knowledge institutions and policy autonomy in energy and innovation, Flanders has all the assets to contribute to European strategic autonomy. The Flemish energy and technology sector is a leader in areas such as grid management, battery technology, hydrogen, renewable energy, and maritime technology. Flanders further stands out for its unique position in offshore energy and the development of energy islands and international interconnections.
Resilient infrastructure and innovative solutions
The roadmap calls for the development of resilient infrastructures, autonomous microgrids, and integrated energy solutions that can withstand physical, cyber, and hybrid threats. The current electrification movement opens up numerous opportunities for both defence and society as a whole. Flanders has the required know-how and testing capabilities to develop and certify these systems.
Opportunities for dual-use innovation and collaboration
The combination of civil and military technology development creates unique opportunities for dual-use innovation. Through collaboration between government, industry, and research institutions, Flanders can become a European reference region for sustainable energy, strategic autonomy, and operational resilience. The roadmap emphasises the importance of joint testing and validation infrastructures, shared roadmaps, and an accelerated path for the certification of innovative technologies.
