No more natural gas connections in new major projects
As of 2021, natural gas distribution network operators are no longer allowed to install natural gas connections for:
- new major subdivisions, blocks of flats, or
- group housing construction projects for which the integrated environment permit for town planning activities has been applied for from 1 January 2021,
- except when the natural gas is used
- as additional heating in combination with a renewable energy system that constitutes the main heating system;
- for collective heating through cogeneration.
As of 2025, natural gas connections will be generally banned in new constructions, for both residential and non-residential buildings.
When is the combination with a natural gas connection still allowed?
Natural gas connections are only allowed for:
- collective cogeneration and collective supplementary heating.
- Collective supplementary heating is only allowed if one of the following renewable energy systems is used for the main heating:
- an electric heat pump used for the collective heating of multiple houses, non-residential buildings or building units
- a connection to an external heat supply system whose heat is generated from renewable energy sources for at least 45%
- a biomass boiler, a biomass stove or building-specific biomass-based qualitative CHP, used for the collective heating of multiple houses, non-residential buildings or building units.
The main heating system accounts for at least 85% of the gross energy requirement for space heating of each house, non-residential building or building unit within the project.
