Sign in using eIDAS

eIDAS allows users in the European Union to sign in to digital services in other EU Member States. To do so, eIDAS uses the authentication process of the user’s own country.

When is this digital key suitable for you?

  • You do not have a Belgian electronic identity card (eID), but you are a national of an EU Member State and want to sign in to a Belgian online government service (for example, My Citizen Profile).

  • You prefer to sign in using your own country’s authentication system rather than create a separate Belgian account.

  • Please note: the identification method you use must be recognised under eIDAS.

To sign in to a Belgian application, you need a BIS number.
If you do not yet have a BIS number, you can apply for one the first time you sign in using eIDAS. This procedure may take several days.

If this step or procedure fails, you can apply for a BIS number directly by emailing identification@ksz-bcss.fgov.be(opens in your email application).

Attach a scanned copy of your identity card or passport and include your address details.

How does it work?

Below are the steps you need to follow to sign in using eIDAS.

  • Stap 1

Go to the application you want to sign in to

  • Stap 2

Click the eIDAS tile on the sign-in screen of the Identity Management system of the Flanders Government.

  • Stap 3

Select the appropriate country by clicking on its flag.

  • Stap 4

Sign in to your home country’s online government service. To do so, use one of the digital keys that have already been approved for eIDAS (in Dutch).

  • Stap 5

The first time you sign in, the authentication process of your home country still needs to be linked to your Belgian identification details. You may be asked to confirm your details and sign in again at a later time.

Do you know your Belgian BIS number?

The system checks whether your BIS number and the identification number issued by your home country can be linked automatically. If the link is successful, you will be signed in using eIDAS.

You do not know your Belgian BIS number or do not have one yet?

The federal authorities will check your details from your home country in the background, verify them against the information registered under your BIS number and link the two records. This may take several days. You will only be able to sign in once this process is complete.

If necessary, the federal government will refer you for further identification.

You applied for a BIS number but have not received a response or confirmation, or you received an error message?

In that case, you can apply for a BIS number directly by emailing identification@ksz-bcss.fgov.be(opens in your email application). Attach a scanned copy of your identity card or passport and include your address details.

  • Stap 6

You now have access to the application you wanted to use.

Sign in as a foreign company

If you want to use Flemish online services such as KLIP or GIPOD as a foreign company and you do not yet have a Belgian company number (CBE number), you must first register your organisation in the Identity Management system of the Flanders Government.

The eIDAS Regulation

eIDAS stands for electronic IDentification Authentication and trust Services. It is the name commonly used for the European legal framework on electronic identification and trust services.

The eIDAS framework allows citizens and businesses to use recognised electronic identification methods across EU Member States. It provides common concepts, rules and infrastructure for access to online services. This facilitates cross-border services and trade between citizens and businesses in the European Union.
