The lower the administrative level, the higher the satisfaction with the policy

Satisfaction with the policy was highest at the lower administrative levels in spring 2023 among the population of the Flemish Region aged 18 and over. On a scale of 0 (very dissatisfied) to 10 (very satisfied), the population’s average satisfaction with policy was 5.7 at local government, 5.4 at provincial government, 5.0 at Flemish government and 4.4 at federal government. Satisfaction with the European government averaged 4.6.

Compared to spring 2021 and 2022, there are no major shifts in average satisfaction with the policy in 2023. Only for satisfaction with local government policy there is a limited decrease between 2021 and 2022.

Comparable figures on satisfaction with policy for the period before 2021 are not available.

Higher educated more satisfied with local policy

Satisfaction with local policy increases with higher education. There are no significant differences for the other background characteristics.

Women and higher educated more satisfied with provincial policy

Women are more satisfied with provincial policy than men. In addition, satisfaction with provincial policy increases with higher education. Furthermore, persons living alone are less satisfied than persons living with a partner and without children.

Women and higher educated more satisfied with Flemish policy

Women are more satisfied with Flemish policy than men. In addition, highly educated people are clearly more satisfied with the Flemish policy than low or medium educated people. There is also lower satisfaction among those living with their parents than among those living with a partner and without children. There is a notable difference by degree of urbanisation: inhabitants of transitional and rural areas are less satisfied with the Flemish policy than inhabitants of central cities.

Women and higher educated more satisfied with federal policy

Women are more satisfied with federal policy than men. In addition, the highly educated are also significantly more satisfied than the low or medium educated. Satisfaction with the federal government is lower among rural residents than among residents of major cities and central cities.

Youth, women and higher educated more satisfied with European policy

Women are more satisfied with European policy than men. In addition, young people (up to 34 years old) are clearly more satisfied than the older age groups. Furthermore, satisfaction with European policy increases with the level of education. Those who (still) live with their parents are also more satisfied than persons living alone or living with a partner and without children. Finally, rural residents register lower satisfaction than residents of major cities, central cities and the urban periphery.
