Environmentally friendly cleaning is possible!

Since 2019, The Agency for Facility Operations has been using cleaning products based on beneficial organisms. These organisms feed on organic dirt and keep working throughout the day, unlike traditional cleaning agents that are only active during the cleaning itself.

 

Here’s an example to clarify: If you have a stain and clean it today, it might not look clean immediately, but after four days, the stain will have disappeared. We tested this on the green chairs at VAC Ghent. For a fresh stain, you spray first and then dab with a cloth. On the second day, you only need to spray again, and the stain will vanish.

A stain that has been there for years is, of course, much harder to remove. In that case, it can take up to a week for the stain to completely disappear.

How does the cleaning product positively impact our building?

  • We plant the equivalent of one tree’s biomass for every 50m² in our buildings—not literally, but in terms of the biomass present in an average tree.

  • We no longer use (eco-friendly) chemicals.

  • This leads to improved air quality with:

    • 50% less PM10 fine dust

    • 40% less PM2.5 fine dust

    • 30% fewer hydrocarbons

    • 100% reduction in VOCs (volatile organic compounds)

    • 50% fewer allergens
