Circular office furniture

The Agency for Facility Operations supports the circular economy and promotes the reuse of materials in its buildings. Through refurbishment, existing materials are given a second life by producing furniture from reclaimed resources. These items are then reintroduced into one of the office buildings.

Both the assessment and inventory, as well as the refurbishment of office furniture

“A Flemish civil servant sits on a bookcase during a meeting. Later, he checks his emails between two desks and eats his sandwich on a gym floor.”
It may sound strange, but refurbishment makes it all possible: old bookcases are turned into seating blocks, desktop surfaces become partition walls, and even a worn-out sports floor is reused as tabletops in the lunch area.

The Agency for Facility Operations has established two framework agreements that allow entities of the Flemish government and local authorities to easily purchase refurbished office furniture. These contracts were awarded to Nnof (Nearly New Office Facilities), a consultancy with 22 staff members specializing in sustainable workplace design and with extensive experience in refurbishment solutions.

In addition to conducting (preliminary) studies and inventories, Nnof also refurbishes the office furniture at its own facility in Vilvoorde.

Nnof has been working with social enterprises for many years, relying on them not only for logistics support but also for parts of the refurbishment process—such as assembly and upholstery.
