The basisbedrag (basic allowance) is a monthly payment for every child in Flanders. It forms part of the Vlaams Groeipakket and helps families with the costs of bringing up their children.
Amount
All children born in or after 2019 will receive the same amount.
Children born on or after 1 January 2019

Children born before 1 January 2019
For children born before 2019, the old child benefit system still applies. They may also be entitled to age-related allowances and other supplements.

Conditions
Your child is entitled to the basisbedrag if they meet the conditions set out below. The paying authority usually checks this automatically.
Your child lives in Flanders
Your child lives and is registered in Flanders.
Children who were born abroad and move to Flanders after 1 January 2019 may also be entitled to the basisbedrag.
Your child has a right of residence for more than 3 months
Your child has Belgian nationality or a right of residence for more than 3 months (in Dutch).
Your child meets the age requirements
- Up to the age of 18: entitlement without conditions
- Up to the age of 21: for children with additional care needs
- From the age of 18 (or 21) up to and including 24: additional conditions relating to, for example, education and work
Application
Whether you need to apply for the basisbedrag yourself depends on your circumstances.
You’ve already received the startbedrag
You don’t need to do anything. You’ll receive the basisbedrag automatically every month.
You haven’t received your startbedrag yet
(for example, if you’re new to Flanders)Apply for the basisbedrag through a Vlaams Groeipakket payment provider (in Dutch). You can choose which payment provider to use. This is the quickest way to get things done.
What if you don’t submit an application?
In that case, the Agentschap Uitbetaling Groeipakket (Groeipakket Payment Agency) will still assess your entitlement.
FONS (the public payment provider) will make the payment in that case. However, this may take longer.
Monthly payment
You will receive the basisbedrag around the 8th of each month for the previous month. If the 8th falls on a weekend or a public holiday, you will receive the payment on the last working day before that date.
Example: if your child is eligible from April, you will receive the first payment around 8 May.
Basisbedrag and other allowances
In some cases, as well as the basisbedrag, you may be entitled to additional support. This depends on your income or your family situation.
