Process management and biodiversity in open ecosystems

We monitor biodiversity in grazed, process-driven nature reserves: from heathland and coastal dunes to salt marshes, nutrient-rich grasslands and riverbanks. We investigate how extensive grazing influences vegetation structure, flora and fauna, and are establishing a scientific basis for nature conservation through long-term monitoring networks, drone mapping and fauna monitoring.

Verge management

As part of the cooperation agreement between De Vlaamse Waterweg nv and INBO, we are mapping the vegetation on verges along waterways. Based on this, we are developing management proposals focused on grassland vegetation with high erosion resistance, low maintenance costs and high ecological value.

Fire, nature and landscape management

We investigate how nature and landscape management influence fire risk and the fire resilience of ecosystems, and compare their long-term effects with those of planned restoration burns. This encompasses both the monitoring of post-fire recovery and the development of decision-support tools for integrated management.

Coastal ecology and management

We support the management and policy-making for the Flemish coast through two complementary approaches: a standardised management assessment of dunes and salt marshes (flora and vegetation monitoring, management recommendations) and a broader vision for the future of the coastal protection belt, in which we seek synergies between nature-based coastal defence, sustainable water management and nature development.

Nature Management Knowledge Platform

In 2021, the LEN team established the Nature Management Knowledge Platform: a structural collaboration between INBO, Natuurpunt, ANB and Natuurinvest (Inverde). The platform collates, integrates and makes state-of-the-art knowledge accessible to all stakeholders. After all, knowledge sharing and integration are essential for tackling the Flemish and European policy challenges surrounding the conservation and restoration of biodiversity.
