Towards a safer and more natural Meuse

Since the floods in the 1990s, the Netherlands and Belgium have been working together on projects to give the Meuse more space, with a focus on flood safety and natural river processes. To continue this positive momentum and pool knowledge, INBO developed the Decision Support Tool (DST) Common Meuse within the framework of the Interreg project Flood Wisdom (Euregio Meuse-Rhine).

This online web platform brings together all kinds of cross-border maps and data on nature development and flood safety along the Common Meuse in a clear and concise manner. With this tool, we hope to support river, levee and nature managers and planners so that they can make integrated and well-informed decisions. This can contribute to sustainable, cross-border planning for a safe and more natural Meuse valley.

The DST Common Meuse is accessible via https://geo.inbo.be/dst_Maasbenl. On the Introduction tab, users will find an overview of the objectives, information about the map layers and a user manual. The next steps are to add an aquatic module and to start developing a cross-border vegetation management vision.

This map shows the difference in height in metres between the top of the levee crest and the maximum predicted water level within the zone during an extreme high water event of 3000 m³/s.
