Indicator in the picture: Membership numbers of nature associations in Flanders are declining

Until 2020, the number of memberships of nature associations in Flanders increased almost every year. At the end of 2024, Flemish nature associations had a total of 243,345 memberships. These include individuals and families.

This indicator shows the evolution of the number of members of nature associations active in Flanders. By nature associations, we mean organisations that are primarily committed to the preservation of biodiversity. From 2024 onwards, the association Velt (Association for Ecological Living and Gardening) is also included in the figures.

In 2024, the total number of memberships fell by 15,907 compared to the previous year. Not a single association saw its membership increase. Greenpeace lost the most members, followed by Vogelbescherming Vlaanderen (Bird Protection Flanders) and Natuurpunt.

Despite the loss, Natuurpunt remains by far the largest nature association in Flanders with 125,640 memberships. In second place is WWF with 56,647 members, followed by Greenpeace with 30,165 members.
