Brighten up the winter with a Ghent azalea

In the darkest months of the year we look for ways of introducing life and colour into our homes. The azalea is the best way of achieving this aim. This abundant, long-blooming plant makes a substantial contribution to the atmosphere and cheerfulness of a home. You will find them at your florist and garden centre.

The Ghent azalea is known all over the world and is an asset to any interior. For a very reasonable price you can purchase an indoor plant with six weeks of splendid blossoms that are at home in a wide variety of interior styles.

Glorious colours

As a result of a process of selection, our Flemish azalea growers can offer a wide range of colours and flowers. No less than 150 different varieties are available.
In addition to red, pink and white there are also two-colour varieties including blossoms with an edge in a different colour. The number of petals varies too, which means you can choose between more or less abundant blossoms.

Low-growing versus standard

For a minimal design, low-growing azaleas in flowerpots or dishes in such sturdy materials as earthenware usually work very well. For a mainly white interior, the white, pink and red azaleas are all suitable. In this setting, a plain cachepot brings out the best in an azalea.
For a natural design, you can combine azaleas with such natural materials as wood. A finish in colours such as brick red, moss green and concrete grey also produce a natural effect.
You can obtain a somewhat warmer look with, for example, a standard azalea on both sides of a door, offering a warm welcome, or on a cabinet or occasional table.

Smart buying

Ghent azaleas flower for a long time but they also have a long sales season. You will find them on sale from August to May. Go for an azalea whose buds are already slightly open. You should already be able to see the colour of the flower. Curling leaves are an indication of poor care and it’s better not to buy any plants like this.

Six weeks of colour in your home

If you follow the advice of real azalea experts closely, you will have up to six weeks of pleasure from your azaleas.
- Don’t put the azalea near a source of heat, nor in a draughty hallway.
- Allow the azalea sufficient light (indirect)
- Water the azalea twice a week by putting it in a basin of water for no more than 30 minutes. Then let it drain well and put it back in its place with ‘dry feet’.
- There is no need to add fertiliser
