Sweet, compact mulberry wins prize at FLORALL awards
The Morus rotundiloba Mojo Berry (Matsunaga PBR) won the gold medal in the ‘Varieties’ category at the FLORALL awards. It was one of the highlights of a trade show already bathing in a noticeably positive ambience.
The professional jury saw a trend in innovations with regard to multifunctional plants that do well on a patio, balcony or in the ground. The compact mulberry – that is sold by tree nursery Willy De Nolf - is a perfect example of this. The plant only grows to a height of 1.5 m, making it suitable for any garden. The jury also saw its excellent resistance to drought and heat as positive. The fact that the plant flowers both on new and on older wood means that it is easy to prune.
Silver also went to the Willy De Nolf team from Waregem. The Weigela florida ‘Picobella® Rosa’ (TVP PBR) charmed the jury with its broad range of possible uses, both in pots and the ground. Another strength praised by the jury was its long flowering period from May to October. Bees also love it.
Bronze went to the Lagerstroemia x hybride ‘Miss Frances.’ This plant does not become too wide and has beautiful branches. The bark and branches also colour beautifully. However, it is the bright red flowers that are the real eyecatcher. The plant is sold by De Vriese-Luyssen of a.sierplant.be in Wingene.
In the ‘Concepts’ category, #Easygreen by VDW Plant in Lokeren took the gold. The total concept puts the spotlight on the possible uses and versatility of the green Euonymus. With visual support it is an interesting eyecatcher at the point of sale at a garden centre or in retail.
AVBS – the horticultural and green federation of Belgium – organises the FLORALL trade fair twice a year. On Tuesday, 20 August, the autumn edition offered a glimpse of the wide range offered by the Belgian horticultural and tree nursery sector. The next edition is scheduled on March, 3rd in 2020.
