Details

eDNA is used to map the presence of otters in Flanders in a targeted, area-wide and standardised manner. This knowledge is necessary to give concrete impetus to the otter species protection programme in Flanders, with numerous planned interventions in, for example, the Scheldt valley, the Antitankgracht region in the Antwerp Kempen and the Meuse valley. Reliable knowledge about the occurrence of otters will also make it possible, in a next step, to map the quality of their habitat in a more targeted manner and to improve it where possible.
Within this project, 23 sub-areas are being defined in Flanders. Within each sub-area, around 20 potentially suitable water bodies will be investigated for the presence of otter DNA over the next three years.
