My general expertise has a strong focus on research supporting the policy makers in the Scheldt estuary (Sea Scheldt). This involves working out nature based solutions such as the SIGMA plan and other climate adaptive measures involving estuarine management. I am involved in working out nearly all the ecosystem visions of the Sigma areas. The interaction with stakeholders and the socio-economic context drive the research questions. This involves mainly advising Scheldt eco-management (author of >45 policy advices, >35 scientific reports).  I coordinate the Seascheldt monitoring network of higher trophic groups (birds, fish, hyperbenthos, macrobenthos, marsh vegetation and habitats) and evaluating the status of the biodiversity in the Scheldt ecosystem (Natura2000, Water framework directive WFD). Since 2011 I am active member of several project groups of the Flemish Dutch Scheldt Commission (VNSC). Part of the kwaliteitskamer for the Flemish Water+Land+Schap projects. Recent projects concerned a food web study of the Scheldt estuary (including stable isotopes), making a climate adaptation plan for Scheldt nature and improve tools for the ecosystem health evaluation.
