AEWA Goose Platform meets in Brussels

From 17 to 19 June, INBO and ANB organised the tenth edition of the annual meeting of the European Goose Management Platform in Brussels. On 16 June, the various working groups within this platform met in advance of the actual meeting.

The platform itself is part of AEWA, the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds. The aim is to sustainably manage both declining and growing goose populations in Europe through international cooperation.

In Flanders, too, migratory geese have long been a focus of attention, both in nature conservation and research. After all, our region plays an important role as a wintering area for some of these species.

A central figure in this is Dr Eckhart Kuijken, former INBO administrator-general. Based on his many years of ongoing research into the pink-footed goose in the Oostkustpolders, he was also one of the founders of this platform.

On 16 June, his work was highlighted during a reception to mark the 30th anniversary of AEWA.
