From biodiversity data to policy
How do you extract useful information about the state of our biodiversity from millions of individual observations? That was the challenge facing the European project B-Cubed that ended in late August 2026. INBO also contributed to this project, in line with its remit to collect and make biodiversity knowledge accessible, and to translate it into policy.
B-Cubed developed new ways of aggregating and analysing large volumes of biodiversity data. For example, species occurrence cubes were developed: a handy way of standardised grouping of observations by species, location and time. The associated Occurrence Cube Download Service has since been integrated into the Global Biodiversity Information Facility. This enables users to access aggregated biodiversity data via this global biodiversity data platform.
INBO contributed to the development of the species occurrence cubes, as well as methods and software to assess the quality of this data and calculate biodiversity indicators. In addition, INBO contributed to a case study in which the developed methods were applied.
