Details
This project focuses on facilitating and harmonising monitoring methods for forest habitats in the European Union, with a specific focus on remote sensing capabilities. Currently, the lack of uniformity between the monitoring (results) of the various EU Member States is hampering international biodiversity policy. In addition, it has been established that the potential of all kinds of remote sensing applications and data sources (including Copernicus) is not being sufficiently exploited.Through workshops, we will identify current (best) practices and gaps in the various Member States and facilitate knowledge exchange. Each of these methods will be tested in at least three partner countries and in at least three different forest habitats.
In this way, we can build and bring together new and existing knowledge about the use of remote sensing in forest monitoring in a standardised manner across several EU Member States. The transferability, and thus operational applicability, of the methods can thus be better validated, enabling us to make recommendations at the end of the pilot on the most promising methods to support EU reporting or the Nature Restoration Law.
