Assessment of the release success of the weatherfish

Since 2021, a species recovery programme has been underway in Flanders for the weatherfish, a highly endangered fish species found in marsh habitats. As part of this programme, alongside habitat restoration and research into the species’ distribution, efforts are also being made to breed and release the fish in order to genetically strengthen existing populations or establish new ones.Through fishing surveys, eDNA analyses and PIT telemetry, efforts are being made to evaluate the restocking programme across three different restocking areas. With this study into the survival and mobility of the species, we aim to provide the restocking programme with the necessary scientific basis, as it has so far been based too heavily on assumptions.
