LIFE Green Valleys

Details

Within the framework of LIFE Green Valleys, a number of European target habitats will be restored. The project provides for 5 hectares to be used as wet meadow (deforestation, cutting down thickets, digging, planting, etc.) and 0.5 hectares as alkaline fens, on land already managed by Natuurpunt Beheer or purchased during the project. The choice where these habitats will be realised is prepared by expert advice. The information from this (study) assignment will be taken into account. More information about LIFE Green Valleys can be found on www.life-greenvalleys.be.
The assignment:
- Carry out an eco-hydrological study (location of infiltration zones/origin of seepage water, determination whether the seepage water is local or regional, operation of local water systems).
- Investigate the potential for restoration of the natural types included in the LIFE Green Valleys project (6410; 7230; 91E0*; 6510, 3140).
- Surface-covering control of canal mapping: using DTM and site visits to map the pattern of canals (GIS layer). Mapping the water table and the presence of seepage (in the winter half year) by means of site visits (aimed at bottleneck detection).
- Identification of the most important factors influencing hydrology in the project area (groundwater extraction, drainage network,...).
- Mapping out the bottlenecks so that the client can translate them into concrete actions (both policy steps and remedial actions).
- Mapping where the quick wins lie and identifying where there is work to be done at policy level.
- Preparation of an overview of abiotic boundary conditions of the nature target types (hydrology: quality, endurance lines and gxg's for soil chemistry the relevant parameters) so that the client can continue working in the future. These boundary conditions must be specified for valley forests, carrs and softwood riparian woodland (91E0), wet meadow plains (6410), alkaline fens (7230), Alopecurus pratensis, Sanguisorba officinalis (6510) (including Sanguisorba grasslands) and open water with Characeae vegetation (3140).
