KlimaEffect - Effects of climate change on biodiversity

This report analyzes the impact of climate change on habitats and species in Flanders during the period 2015–2025. It presents observed and modelled climate trends at the European, Belgian, and Flemish levels, and subsequently discusses their effects on nature and forests in Flanders. Particular attention is given to changes in temperature, precipitation, drought, storms, and sea level rise.
The report examines the sensitivity of various habitat types — such as mudflats and salt marshes, dune habitats, open waters, heathlands, grasslands, marshes, and forests — to climate change. It also analyzes the impact on specific species groups, including butterflies, wild bees, dragonflies, and amphibians. Expected effects on phenology, distribution, and ecosystem dynamics are described.
In addition, the report maps out climate-adaptive measures that can enhance the resilience of nature and forests. It offers up-to-date insights from recent research, with the aim of supporting policymakers, land managers, and other stakeholders in integrating climate adaptation into nature management and policy instruments.
