Details
Aspen is one of two native poplar species, alongside the European black poplar. Both native poplar species are extremely rare, with natural populations now extinct. Here and there, a relict tree can still be found. These native poplars had no economic value, their habitat (riverbanks) was destroyed, and they were not planted.Forest users have a strong interest in aspen for forest conversion projects. This native tree species grows quickly, even on sandy soils. The species can play an important role in restoring biodiversity, soil and forest climate. This species is also interesting for timber production. However, there is a shortage of seeds for the production of forest seedlings for trembling poplar. With this project, we are propagating plus trees and providing new seed sources. In this way, we are ensuring more forestry breeding material and increasing genetic diversity within the species.
