The Flemish Forest Vitality Monitoring Network (Level I) forms part of the international ICP Forests programme. This publication explains how the assessment of forest health in Flanders is carried out within the Flemish Level I monitoring network, or forest vitality monitoring network. The key parameters involved are an assessment of crown condition based on an estimate of the percentage of leaf or needle loss, and a description of symptoms. In addition, examples of common symptoms are discussed, namely leaf damage, discolouration, crown dieback, branch breakage, deformation, signs of the presence of insects or fungi, wounds, resin or sap, and necrosis or rot.
