Tijdens ons eerste webinar van het jaar opent Jo Noppe (Hoofdstatisticus van de Vlaamse overheid) met een compacte terugblik op de realisaties van het netwerk Statistiek Vlaanderen in 2025 en een vooruitblik op de prioriteiten en uitdagingen voor 2026. Vervolgens geeft Ed Humpherson, Head of the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) - de onafhankelijke regulator die er in het Verenigd Koninkrijk over waakt dat officiële statistieken het publieke belang dienen - een keynote speech over de kansen en uitdagingen voor openbare statistieken en openbarestatistiekinstellingen in het VK.
Onder leiding van Ed Humpherson bevordert het OSR de productie en het gebruik van kwalitatieve, betrouwbare statistieken die de samenleving accuraat weerspiegelen. OSR verdedigt het recht van gebruikers op betrouwbare data en speelt een cruciale rol in het verbeteren van statistische kwaliteit in de Britse overheid. Bij zorgen over misbruik of misrepresentatie van statistieken treedt OSR op om integriteit en transparantie te waarborgen.
Ed Humpherson kan buigen op een lange loopbaan in economische en publieke verantwoording (o.a. bij de National Audit Office sinds 2009), en uit zijn engagement in organisaties met sociale impact en economisch beleid, waaronder de Motability Foundation (Vice Chair), Pro Bono Economics (trustee) en adviesrollen bij de Regulatory Policy Institute, Administrative Data Research UK en het Westminster Abbey Institute. Zijn boodschap: statistiek moet niet alleen technisch sterk zijn, maar ook publiek vertrouwen verdienen en geïnformeerde besluitvorming ondersteunen.

Ed Humpherson zal in zijn keynote speech ingaan op drie belangrijke uitdagingen voor het officiële statistieksysteem in het Verenigd Koninkrijk:
- De crisis van publiek vertrouwen in tijden van desinformatie
- De explosie van interesse in en aanvragen van data sinds de COVID‑19‑pandemie.
- De daling in respons en kwaliteit van economische statistieken, en de media‑ en politieke aandacht daarvoor in de recente jaren.

During our first webinar of the year, Jo Noppe (Chief Statistician of the Flemish Government) will open with a concise review of the achievements of the Statistiek Vlaanderen network in 2025 and an outlook on the priorities and challenges for 2026.
Next, Ed Humpherson, Head of the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) — the independent regulator that ensures official statistics in the United Kingdom serve the public good — will deliver a keynote speech on the opportunities and challenges for official statistics and statistical institutions in the UK.
Under Ed Humpherson’s leadership, OSR promotes the production and use of high‑quality, trustworthy statistics that accurately reflect society. OSR defends users’ right to reliable data and plays a crucial role in improving statistical quality across the UK government. When concerns arise about misuse or misrepresentation of statistics, OSR intervenes to safeguard integrity and transparency.
Ed Humpherson has built a long career in economic and public accountability (including at the National Audit Office since 2009), and contributes actively to organisations with social impact and economic policy relevance, among them the Motability Foundation (Vice Chair), Pro Bono Economics (trustee), and advisory roles at the Regulatory Policy Institute, Administrative Data Research UK and the Westminster Abbey Institute. His message is clear: statistics must not only be technically sound, but must also earn public trust and support informed decision‑making.
