Details

This project tackles bird damage in fruit growing with an innovative, data-driven approach. Through passive acoustic monitoring (PAM), we map which bird species are present in fruit plots. We also monitor damage to fruit in these orchards. We use these insights to develop a spatially explicit model that predicts the risk of damage in the LEADER region of South-West Haspengouw and enables targeted preventive action. We are also testing smart deterrent methods that are only used when species that cause damage are actually present, in order to prevent habituation and increase efficiency. In this way, we support growers with innovation and practical tools for effective preventive management aimed at limiting bird damage in fruit cultivation.
