Details
Since 2019, the North Asian weatherfish (Mirgurnus bipartitus) has been present in the northeast of Flanders. This species has recently been spreading from the Netherlands, where it has been present since 2012. Monitoring the spread and possible removal of captured specimens is necessary because this invasive alien species occurs in the same area as the protected European weatherfish and could pose a threat to it.
This project offers scientific support for the monitoring and management of the North Asian weatherfish. The Nature and Forest Agency has set up a rapid response action to limit the numbers of this invasive alien species. The research maps the distribution through traditional monitoring with traps and electrofishing, and with eDNA. The captured specimens are removed. We also collect ecological data on the reproduction and diet of this species based on the specimens caught. This knowledge can inform management about the possible impact on other species and in particular on the weatherfish.
