Details

Because of the high number of wildlife collisions on the N76 between Oudsbergen and Genk, the Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer Limburg installed a grid on both sides of the N76 in spring 2021 in order to keep large mammals from crossing the road. This grid prevents collisions on the road, but without passages that allow mammals to cross safely, it has a very fragmenting effect. Pending a sustainable fauna connection planned through the Vlaams Actieprogramma Ecologische Ontsnippering (VAPEO), a wildlife detection system (WDS) will be installed in 2022.

INBO will use camera traps and log data from the WDS to check whether the WDS is functioning properly. Based on this data, we can determine if and when the WDS is activated when no animals pass or when animals cross without activation of the WDS. The monitoring task will start in 2022 and end in 2025.
