During the creation of controlled flooding areas, ring dikes are constructed to protect the hinterland. The construction of these dikes requires large quantities of sand and clay. There is a lack of clay in particular. Where the dike will be constructed, the peat is first removed from the subsoil. This clay can be obtained locally. The resulting holes can be filled with the excavated peat. This could provide a solution to the shortage of clay and the peat surplus. The experiment was set up to ascertain whether alder fen woods can be developed in these locations. This approach can serve as a forest compensation measure and produce a win-win situation.
